Carlito Pizarras: Hero of the Tarsiers
In the forest of Bohol, Philippines, a nine-year-old boy named Carlito Pizarras hunts tarsiers (TAR-see-ers) for his father. Tarsiers look like adorable aliens with gigantic eyes and batlike ears. His father supports the family by selling them as stuffed animals or pets. Then one day, Carlito keeps one of them as a pet. As he gets to know the extremely shy and delicate creature, he realizes hunting them is a mistake.
Follow Carlito’s journey from being one of the tarsiers’ fiercest enemies to being their number one protector as he narrates in this inspiring picture book for all ages. |

Carlito Pizarras: Hero of the Tarsiers is a book that will capture the interest of children and adults alike. The colorful illustrations help tell the true story of Carlito Pizarras and his efforts to protect the Tarsiers, a tiny, unusual looking animal in the Philippines. The book includes facts about the Tarsiers and pictures of them in their natural habitat. Any child who cares about animals and the environment will be inspired by this man’s story and learn how just one person can make a difference. (Brooke Nicolls, retired high school teacher)
The author does a great job in writing about rare animals in the Philippines. It’s educational and this book which teaches children and adults should be in every classroom. We need more stories like this to enlighten readers, especially young minds, how important it is to treat all living creatives with respect. (Michael Sullivan, author of "Necessary Heartbreak: A Novel of Faith and Forgiveness" and "Everybody's Daughter.")
