Review by Reading with Your Kids Podcast
At Reading with Your Kids, we’re all about encouraging kids to love and accept themselves for who they are. Being you is the best thing you can do for yourself. Children’s picture books can be a powerful tool to share this message without preaching. In today’s post, we’re delighted to introduce our latest certified read that instils this powerful message with a funny story based on the zoo animals in Zoobooloo.
Zoobooloo is a delightfully funny picture book written by Christine L. Villa and illustrated by Kathrina Iris. We love children books! They are also especially enjoyable with great illustrations like this one has!
In this silly story, the animals at the zoo(Zoobooloo) complain about how unhappy they are with one or some of their body parts. Giraffe doesn’t like his long legs. Elephant is bored with his old grey suit and wants to makeover. Zebra wants to have thick mane like lion but lion thinks it’s bothersome and doesn’t mind giving it up for Elephant’s ears. He thinks this will make him look cooler. Polar bear wants to exchange his white fur with flamingo’s pink feather. Upon hearing all this whining, Monkey comes up with a brilliant idea – A SWITCH-A-ROO. He suggests all the animals to switch their body parts with the animal of their choice. They happily agree. A GRAND SWITCH-A-Roo is then organized that takes place the next day. All the animals exchange their body parts. But will they love themselves with the new body part? Read the book to find out. We enjoyed this well-written, detailed illustrated book that will transport readers to another world, a world of imagination and animals. The detailed illustrations and thoughtful color choice by Kathrina Iris will help young readers narrate the story. This is a fun picture book that will interest almost any child as it has just the right amount of humor and excitement.
If you love picture books that are plain fun, vibrant colors, and beautiful illustrations with a meaningful message, this is the book which you will definitely want to read with your kids! Kids will love laughing at the hilarious and imaginative illustrations of the animals. The color pages given at the end is our favorite part of the book.
FINAL VERDICT
Overall, Zoobooloo is a sweet, quick read that your little ones will be sure to love. Like the zoo animals in the book, many kids are not satisfied with their looks and hopefully, this book will help them to cope with self-doubt and offer them an opportunity to discuss their feelings!

Visited my 4-year-old Granddaughter last weekend & she really liked the books! She would giggle when I read Switch-a-roo to her. Your books kept my active Granddaughter interested! (Jacqueline Hay, Sacramento)
Zoobooloo is such a fun read. I’m so glad I bought a copy. The theme is very well presented from cover to cover. I like that you didn’t explain the process of the Switcharoo. The striped elephant is my favorite. He does look like a huge cage. (Beth Bacod, Sacramento)
It’s a fun story with a meaningful message. I enjoyed reading this to my son. The artwork is cute as well. I definitely recommend for your kids. (Janella Alix, Canada)
I love the creative imagination of the author. By showing in a humorous way how the animals are not happy with their body parts, any kid can easily learn a valuable lesson. Any adult will also find this book enjoyable! (Rina Macaranas, stay-at-home mom, Bakersfield)
